ARIZONA DERBY DAMES DOUBLE HEADER 2008 PLAYOFFS: Survival of the Fastest The Brutal Beauties vs. The Schoolyard Scrappers The Runaway Brides vs. The Coffin Draggers Saturday September 20 at Castle Sports Club Phoenix, AZ (August 27). It’s time for the Arizona Derby Dames’ 2008 playoffs and four teams remain. Who will survive the intense competition of the September seeded match-ups to continue on to the October championship game? Remaining are the first ranked, still undefeated Brutal Beauties (4:0), second ranked Runaway Brides (3:1), third ranked Schoolyard Scrappers (2:2) and fourth ranked Coffin Draggers (1:3). After the dust clears, will the first and second ranked Beauties and Brides be advancing to the finals? Don’t count out the Schoolyard Scrappers or the Coffin Draggers. Just this one win would take them to the championships. By the looks of group sales already being booked, The Castle Sports Club promises to be packed on September 20, 2008 with fans anxious to see which will be the final two teams standing. The match-ups of the Brutal Beauties with the Schoolyard Scrappers and the Coffin Draggers with the Runaway Brides are repeats of the Arizona Derby Dames largest attended double header all season which was in May, so get your tickets early. First up: The Runaway Brides have to get past The Coffin Draggers for a second time this year to secure their spot in the championship. In May, the Brides were able to defeat the Draggers but a repeat is never a given. Bride captain, Ann Thrash, has to lead her skaters past Dolly de los Muertos’ tight Coffin Dragger team who will bout with very strong brand new Dragger jammer Bad Betty. In a repeat of last year’s September playoffs, the Brutal Beauties face the Schoolyard Scrappers to defend their undefeated status. In 2007, the Scrappers came up just 16 points short against the Beauties in a bid to move on to the championship. This year, the Scrappers have a lot more experience and some wins under their belt, not to mention the fierce veteran leadership team of captain Rowdy Roulette and co-captain Frankie Fitz. The Beauties go into this playoff season with some changes in their leadership. As original Brutal Beauty captain, Kamikaze Kiwi (who built and led the undefeated Brutal Beauties legacy for three seasons) steps down; co-captain Sally Whacker steps up as new captain to lead the Brutal Beauties into the post-season. Original Derby Dame and July 2008 Brutal Beauties M.V.P. Shawnee Rotten steps up to co-captain. The Castle Sports Club is located at 11420 North 19th Avenue Phoenix, AZ 85029 (602-331-2582). Doors will open at 7 p.m. with the bouts starting at 8 p.m. Advance tickets can be purchased for $8 at the following locations: Bookmans, Cage World and the Castle Sports Club. $8 general admission tickets, a limited number of $15 reserved front row seats, as well as discounted reserved seat group tickets are available at brownpapertickets.com. Tickets will be $10 at the door the night of the bout. Kids 12 & under are admitted free. After the game, follow the Dames to their official party venue, Hazelwood’s First Place Bar and Grill, on Indian School Road just east of 36th Street. Mark your calendars now for the Arizona Derby Dames 2008 Season Championship on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at the Castle Sports Club. The winners from the September 20th bouts will battle it out for the trophy, while some of the Arizona Derby Dames’ men will strap on some skates for an Arizona Derby Dames Widowers Club derby bout. |
